PRK: A Great Alternative to LASIK
Our doctors understand that not all patients who want to see clearly without contact lenses or glasses are good candidates for LASIK. This is why we offer PRK eye surgery at our Erie, PA, surgical office. This medical treatment can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism in patients who have:
- Thin corneas
- Higher degrees of nearsightedness
- Patients with jobs or lifestyles that increase the risk of flap dislocation

Side Effects
The surgical procedure is painless. In some cases, though, patients have reported feeling a bit of discomfort after treatment during the healing process. To reduce discomfort, patients can take pain medications, use prescribed eye drops as directed, and rest. Discomfort should subside daily.
Taking Medications as Directed
It is important that you care for your eyes according to the instructions provided by our team following PRK surgery. We prescribe eye drops for patients to provide their eyes with additional moisture and prevent infection.
Quick Healing
The top layer of the cornea generally regenerates in a matter of days thanks to the rapid reproduction of cells in the eye. Because of the dramatic change in your vision following surgery, you may develop temporary dry eye, which can be relieved with eye drops.
Resuming Normal Activities
After undergoing PRK at our Erie, PA, surgical center, most patients are able to resume normal activities within 24 hours. However, you should avoid touching the eyes, going in pools or other bodies of water, and contact sports for at least a few weeks.
Other Recovery Tips
We recommend that patients avoid exposure to sunlight and limit the amount of strain they place on their eyes in the days and weeks after surgery. We also advise taking vitamins and Omega-3 supplements during the first few weeks post-surgery.
Great Outcomes
Patients will notice changes to their vision immediately after surgery, but they may have to wait up to six months to a year for the results to finalize.
